The 50 years old most prestigious and reputed University in Tanzania have been ranked 23rd position in the latest rankings on ICT usage among world Universities. From last year’s position 13th simply means something should be done and more effort t to be invested to recover from the fall.
Although we have to realize that, UDSM is the only high learning institution in Tanzania to make out that position in this year contest. Also, the country has climbed up the scale by 1,437 places, from position 3.415 in 2011 to position 1,978 this year.
The rankings were done by the company Webo Metrics and it was released July this year. Only one University from Tanzania has made it to the top hundreds best universities for ICT usage in Africa.

Hint, “The webometrics University ranking is a ranking system based on university web presence, visibility and web access. This ranking measure how strong a university is present in the web by its own web domain, subpages, rich files, and scholarly articles”

The legendary University of Cape Town has again retained its position in this year’s competition, followed by four other South African higher learning institutions closing the top five of the rankings in Africa.
On our region the East Africa region, Makerere University of Uganda heads the region with the 11th position in Africa and 1,173 globally, nearby contenders where the University of Kenya at 14th position ranking 1,435 globally.
Prof. Makenya Maboko UDSM vice chancellor justifying the situation he said “it doesn’t mean we are unconcern about this, but basically this does not reflect much on the quality of education”. He said there are so many other factors to consider what he referred as “website updating”.
However, the rankings are not based on research, teaching, number of citations, ability to create internally generated funds as well as international outlook measured by the proportional of the international staff and students at institutions in the field.
