0ver $284m to be invested in peat Energy in Rwanda

Turkey firm is said to invest over 284 million US dollars in an energy project that will generate electricity from peat. The money will be used among other things for the construction of the plant to generate peat electricity. The work is scheduled to start within 12-15 month from now. The plant will be located in Southern province.

The Company Turkey's Hakim have studied that a peat master plan indicates that Rwanda's peat capacity stands at 155 million tonnes of dry peat. spread over 50,000 hectares. The Rwandan government expect peat potential to be equivalent to 1,200MW with 77 percent of the resources found in the southern province.The plan is to generate about 200MW of power by 2017.

In Rwabusoro marshland, there are peat reserves with potential to generate 450 MW of electricity in a period of 25 years and the exploitation of peat energy result in about 90 percent increase of the current total power generation in the country.
