Kenya: Google Swahili Push for More Local Content





Google Kenya has embarked on a drive for increased local content on its various platforms in Kenya through a Google in Swahili workshop slated for later this week.
Salome Nduku, the Google localisation specialist for Sub-Saharan Africa said that the workshop will enable discussion with Swahili experts and enthusiasts on how to increase local content in Swahili on the Internet.

"While various Google products are available in Swahili, Swahili content online is still minimal compared to languages such as English or French," she explained.
According to Didier Gobert, Google director of enterprise, EMEA this generation of local content will create a growth environment for businesses in Kenya and Africa.

He said: "Over 5 million businesses have now moved to Google Apps. This demonstrates how technology and the Internet are helping businesses to grow."
The workshop that is part of a series of 10 events and two round-table sessions will also see players from key sectors of Kenya's economy come together to promote collective growth through technological innovation and development of local content.

Kenya Country Manager and Google SSA ambassador Joseph Mucheru said the series of events are targeted towards highlighting the the critical role that digital can play in different sectors of the country and how local stakeholders can contribute.

"Our vision is to align the Kenyan private sector with homegrown talent so as to create a local thriving digital ecosystem," said Mucheru.
He added that the campaign will also facilitate networking between Kenyan businesses and local talent who can formulate and execute on their digital strategy.
