Power project on Ruaha in pipeline

Great Ruaha River
Dar es Salaam. The Rufiji Basin Development Authority (Rubada) and Korea Water Resources Corporation (K Water) have agreed to undertake a joint power project. The proposed study seeks to investigate whether it was possible to generate power by using water from the river without affecting other activities, such as irrigation and domestic use.

The project proposal shows that hydro-power plants will be built at Tosamaganga, Manyandamonda, Ibosa and Nginayo.Rubada director general, Mr Aloyce Masanja, said Iringa was blessed with abundant rains and River Ruaha could be extended to benefit the region and other areas in the country, in terms of electricity, irrigation and water for domestic use.

“There is potential for multipurpose use of Ruaha…and this is what this study seeks to know,” he said in Dar es Salaam yesterday.

The study will be conducted in the next one year, Mr Masanja said, noting that in 1984, Norway, through Norad, conducted a similar study and reported that the area had the capacity of generating 87MW of power.

“We think that it is time to verify the study, many years have passed and we need to develop the area,” he noted.

For his part, Rubada Board of Directors chairman, Prof Raphael Mwalyosi, said that if successful, the project would be a great success for Iringa Region, southern highlands and the nation at large.“We have given a green light to this study because we believe that it has the potential,” he said.
