Dar es Salaam. Five
institutions of higher learning in Tanzania have for the first time adopted the
Academic Registration Information System (ARIS) developed by the University of
Dar es Salaam Computing Centre (UCC).
The development and
institutionalization of ARIS is touted as a paradigm shift as far as academic
records management in Tanzania is concerned.
A press statement issued by the UCC in Dar es Salaam yesterday said for
the first time in the history of UDSM and the country, ARIS enabled automation
of the admission process through software. According to the statement, the
software would enable automation of room allocation to students in halls of
residence.
It would also facilitate the
processing of examination results from continuous assessment tests and
university examinations as well as issuance of transcripts.
This has not only reduced operational
costs significantly, in terms of stationery and time, but has also improved
efficiency and increased transparency. ARIS is currently being used by Ardhi
University, the Institute of Social Welfare, the University of Dodoma, Mzumbe
University and UDSM.
The statement noted
another key development achieved as the development of the Prime Minister’s
Office - Regional Administration and Local Governments Planning and Reporting
(PlanRep) system. PlanRep System is software developed by UCC for handling the
planning and reporting of activities under the Prime Minister’s Office Regional
Administration and Local Government (PMO-RALG).
The system is currently being used by
all district councils in the country and provides inputs into the strategic
budget allocation system (SBAS), also developed by UDSM through UCC for preparation
of the national budget under the ministry of Finance. “This software has a huge
impact at national level where it has improved efficiency, consistency,
uniformity and transparency in the planning of activities and reporting on the
implementation of projects countrywide,” the statement said.
The last achievement is the
development of the Central Admission System (CAS) under the Tanzania Commission
for University (TCU). It is a system which was developed by UDSM through UCC
for TCU for admission of applicants into public and private higher learning
institutions. The impact of CAS is quite enormous at national as well as
individual levels, especially on reducing costs and improving efficiency. The
system has also eliminated the possibility of forgeries in O-Level and A-Level
examination results.
