Vodacom has
outlined plans to expand its power sites project to the rest of the African
continent. This follows the success of the pilot initiative in South Africa,
where it is headquartered. The first such site was established at a rural area
in Kwazulu-Natal, bringing electric power to the community for the first time.
Suraya Hamdulay, Executive Head Media for CSI & Sustainability, told CAJ
News that Vodacom is currently looking for more sites in South Africa and its
other operating companies in Africa where community power sites can be
established. Outside South Africa, Vodacom has operations in Democratic
Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Mozambique and Tanzania. Through the community
power sites projects, Vodacom connects public places such as schools to its
power bases.
