Dar es Salaam. The government has directed the Tanzania Telecommunications Company Limited (TTCL) board of directors to seek the service of the Control and Auditor General’s (CAG) office so as to put the finance books of the firm in order.
The directive was issued by Communications, Science and
Technology deputy minister January Makamba on Monday in Dar es Salaam. He was
talking with TTCL workers about the challenges the firm faces as well as
their problems.
He said the first move was for the CAG to look into the finance books of the firm and take appropriate legal measures against any shortcomings.
“Apart
from using your internal auditor, it would be wise to consult the CAG so as
to solve problems once and for all,” he said.
He
said that he, as a leader and a good citizen, has decided to report names of
people who messed up with the company’s finances that were handed to him to
the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) so that
investigations would be opened.
“I
want you to talk openly so that we find lasting solutions to these problems,”
he urged workers.
He appealed to any worker who has documentary evidence as per the allegations to come out and present them so that authorities would work on them. He noted that the government was in the process of making sure that TTCL got new leadership and that he was optimistic that everything would be put back to order.
Mr
Makamba said TTCL had huge potential to generate wealth for the nation,
adding that the government was determined to ensure its operations run
smoothly and benefit the workers and the nation as well.
TTCL’s director general Said Amir appealed to workers to speak out the truth, remain persistent, especially at this time when the company is passing through such turbulence.
TTCL workers alleged that the management and the board have
generally been mismanaging the finances and operations of the company. The
minister also hinted on the possibility of the government reclaiming shares
currently in private hands.
