Developers
from different African regions were gathered in Lagos Nigeria in the event
African Maps Developers conference. Google were the main host of the event.
They encouraged African map developers by giving them the support and guidance
they need to achieve their task.
The
event gave the opportunity to the developers to discuss about the ideas and
ways they could use to develop these maps easily and how to overcome the
challenges emerging on the way during the compilation of their work.
Google trusted African developers to develop their own maps and
it is for the African regional developers themselves to do the task and agreed
for the final product before Google give go ahead for the maps to be included
in the Google maps.
Recently
Google have been hosting a lot of events and provides mentorship programmes in
Africa believing that Africa is the next potential tech market of the world.
There
is no business relationship existing between Google Map Developers and Google
itself, except that the developers make use of the Google
Map tools available online to perfect their creative skills in
map development.
Hint: Google Map Tools are tools
which are used by developers to relocate places on the maps by marking
individual places on these maps.
The
mapping projects are going on several parts of Africa and in the last visit of
the Google Team in Tanzania several places in Dar es Salaam was also marked in
these maps including places of worship, hotels and tourist attractions. Recently Lesotho agreed to be open for the
country to be mapped using Google Map maker as it was reported during the Lagos
conference.
Several
Universities and Institutions have been mapped in Nigeria
including University of Lagos, University of Ibadan, Benson Idahosa University
(BIU) and Ahmadu Bello University, among others across Africa.
Developers
have been urged by Google to participate in regional map development since it
helps in marking useful local areas in their towns and made them to be accessed
easily on the Google maps and make them reachable.
