Origin of tech giant companies names…..it’s time to think for yours



The name COMPAQ was formed by using COMP for computer and PAQ to denote small integral object. Recently COMPAQ has joined forces with HP in the digital gadgets world. The name HP was formed from the two tech guys Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard when they had to toss a coin to decide whether to call the company  Hewlett Packard or Packard Hewlett am sure you know who won the honor definitely Hewlett that is why we have Hewlett Packard (HP) today.
The legendary Google started its name as a joke boasting about the amount of information the search engine would be able to search. It was originally named Googol a world for the number represented by one followed by 100 zeros. After founders   Stanford graduates students Sergey Bin and Larry Page presented their project to an angel investor, they receive a cheque made out to ‘Google’.

                        Hint: Apple was the favorite fruits of the founder Steve Jobs. He was three month late in filling a name for the business and he threatened to call his company “Apple Computers” if the other colleagues didn’t suggest a better name by 5 O’clock guess what happened ……

The world Yahoo was invented by Jonathan Swift and used in his book ‘Gulliver’s Travels’. It represents a person who is repulsive in appearance and action is barely human. Yahoo founders Jerry Young and David Filo selected the name because they considered themselves yahoos.

Bob Noyce and Gordon Moore wanted to name their new company ‘Moore Noyce’ but they were unlucky since the name was already trademarked by the hotel chain so they named their company using acronyms   INTEgrated ELectronics also known as ‘INTEL’.

Jack Smith got the idea of accessing e-mail via the web from a computer anywhere in the world. When Sabeer Bhatia came up with the business plan for the mail service, he tried all kinds of names ending in ‘mail’ and finally settled for Hotmail as it included the letters “html” the programming languages used to write web pages. Hotmail was later on bought by Microsoft which stands for MICROcomputer SOFTwares coined by Bill Gates originally christened Micro-Soft the ‘-‘was removed later.
