Okunor — Scancom Limited, operators of MTN Ghana, a leading telecommunications giant in the country, in conjunction with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has handed over a US$100,000 Information Communication Technology (ICT) Centre to the Lower Manya Municipality.
The facility, which aims at empowering Ghanaians, particularly school children within relatively disadvantaged areas, was the fourth of ten MTN and UNDP learning centres to have been commissioned across the country in less than a year.
Techimantia in Brong Ahafo, Ningo in Greater Accra, and Nyinahin in the Ashanti region are the other places that have benefited from the projects, apart from Kpong in the Lower Manya Municipality.
Speaking at the ceremony in Kpong, the Corporate Services Executive of MTN, Mrs. Cynthia Lumor, said the MTN found the construction of the centres as a fulfilling process which brings positive change that enriches the lives of the communities it serves.
But, she was quick to express singular gratitude to the all stakeholders who had contributed in diverse ways to the success of the on-going commitment of the company. According to her, one primary goal of the company to embark on such nationwide projects was to contribute their widow's mite towards the development of the nation through the deploying of ICT centres in communities where the citizens would have access to computers training.
This effort, she claimed, would go a long way to improve the performance of rural basic schools in the ICT curriculum, as introduced by the Ghana Education Service (GES). "As market leaders in the telecommunication industry, MTN realised the ICT education deficit in the country, and took up the challenge to complement government's effort in this area," she underscored.
The Corporate Services Executive of MTN continued that the initiative was in support of efforts to bridge the digital divide between the served and underserved communities, and also support the implementation of the mandatory ICT component of the new Educational Reform.
The UNDP Country Director, Mr. Kamil Kamaludeen, urged members of the area to ensure that the facility would be better than its present condition, and further called on other private organisations to emulate the shining example of MTN.
On his part, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the area, Isaac Agbo Tetteh, expressed his appreciation to MTN for considering his municipality over the Metropolitan, Municipal and District assemblies in the country.
According to him, the worthy cause of the leading telecommunication giants to construct the facility was not out of proportion, since the government alone cannot do everything, and that it was just right that the private sector supports. He assured the company of the support of his office and traditional leaders in the area to ensure the long life span of the facility.
