LAGOS: In a
surprise report, Ghana’s National Communications Authority (NCA) announced that
Glo Ghana and Airtel Ghana both lost subscribers in the month of September.
Glo recorded its
first loss in users after being in the country for the past five months. Glo
Ghana, a subsidiary of Globacom Nigeria, began operations in late April and
currently has a 6.5 percent share of the 24.88 million mobile subscriptions in
the country, according to the latest data from the National Communications
Authority (NCA).
Between
August and September, Glo’s subscriber base fell by 3,254 to 1.610 million
subscribers, representing a marginal 0.2 percent drop. The NCA results are
based on activity over a 90-day period. The NCA said Airtel Ghana also lost
1,829 subscribers and finished Q3 with 3.040 million customers, representing a
12.2 percent market share. But there were positives in the telecom and mobile
sector.
Vodafone Ghana
increased its subscriber base, crossing the 5 million mark for the first time,
with 5.03 million customers or 20.2 percent market share at end-September. Tigo
Ghana also closed the period with 3.76 million subscribers, equal to 15.1
percent market share.
Leader MTN Ghana
increased its subscriber base marginally, and maintained its top position with
11.269 million subscribers, representing 45.1 percent of the market, the NCA
reported.
