Provided that the owner of the Phone number exists in your contacts list with the Gmail account you are able to send text SMS and to call a person from anywhere in the world. The only drawback is that callers from USA and Canada are the one having the free privilege while people from other countries would have to pay at a very little cost of $0.02 per minute.
Dialing a phone number works just like a normal phone. Just click “Call phone” at the top of your chat list and dial a number or enter a contact’s name. The feature has been tested by Google team and found to be useful. Voice and Video plugins have to be installed. For more details click here

Sometimes your friend or client provides you with his netbook to install operating system on it. Most of the times we install OS in systems using the CD drive of the system.  Unless you have the external CD drive to install the OS when the system crashed you will not be able to restore or format the system. The problem has been solved by windows 7 USB/DVD Tool the tool can be downloaded from this link.

The basic requirements to perform this task are a windows operating system in .ISO format and flash drive not less than 4GB or empty DVD with no data at all.

1st step: Install the windows 7 USB/DVD Tool in your system (I received some errors when I was installing in Windows XP (SP1) so I would advise you to use letter version of windows during the setup installation in the system.

2nd Step: Soon after installing the setup a small window will pop up if you click the shortcut icon at the desktop of your PC of the software and you are good to go just trace where you kept the .ISO file and select it.

3rd Step: You will have to select wither you want to create a bootable flash disk or DVD as soon you select the drive for the case of USB you will be prompted if you want to erase any available data in the USB as you click yes immediately the process of converting your USB into bootable one will start.
Hint: Do not forget to change the booting options and privileges in the system setups in the beginning if you want to boot from the USB flash disk since the system won’t see your flash disk make sure you change the booting options first.

Have Fun and Enjoy hacking Please don’t abuse the knowledge.

I was sitting on the coach in the evening watching the parliament session on the local T.V station, Tanzania Broadcasting Cooperation (TBC) when the member of the opposition party (CDM) Mr. Zitto Zuberi Kabwe was reading the opposition’s suggested budget to the members of the Parliaments using Apple IPAD 2.0. Franklyn speaking I was amazed like several other Tanzanians who were watching that parliament session. Things have changed and Africa is dwelling into technology. When technologists practice technology is a normal thing but when conservative African politicians starting to believe in technology as a new way of life this  is sound to be very promising for the future of the Tanzania information and communication technology industry.
“Five African presidents to follow on twitter” it was the heading of one of the leading African online technology magazine. The article mentioned five African presidents you could always follow their post in Twitter including president Jacob Zuma of South Africa, Goodluck Jonathan the Nigerian president, Paul Kagame president of Rwanda, John Evans Mills president of Ghana and my president, the president of the United republic of Tanzania honorable Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete.
Although we are not sure if someone is hired to tweet for them or not, but this shows the power of technology in African politics as the means for them to interact with their people and share their perspective and different opinions with their communities. Currently the Tanzanian president has around one thousand and something tweets with approximately 23,000 thousands followers and himself following two pages. The two pages he follows include the page of Mr. January Makamba (Deputy Minister of Communication, Science and Technology).
In Facebook there are several other pages and groups aiming at creating awareness on open governance and mobilizing people to influence or achieve to attain something from the government through the power of media and technology. The recent events in North Africa where by we have witnessing some dictatorship governments falling apart some people has been suggesting the influence of social networking sites and online forums were by people meet and discuss several matters affecting their countries has been the major sources of these revolutions. The video posted on YouTube during the Gaddafi regime about people being tortured by the dictatorship government was among the reasons led to the public uprising and fight to the government with no fear while driven with hunger for revenge.  The CNN I report and other online T.V shows where by people have been able to upload pictures and videos about the events occurring in real time on the ground has been the major source of information when the local authorities prevents news  companies and media to have access to the information.
The most amazing thing is that the information spread fast and reaches the youth as the major audience since they are the main users of technologies. Wither it the election campaign or the local election results people they can get detail immediately online. Recent I heard the rumors the name of the Nigerian plane crash passengers were released on twitter before even the official report of the Nigerian government. Sometimes the public has been misusing of the technology which mainly comes from the social networking sites to commit their own evils. All in all everything as it advantages and disadvantages.
I have been in the group “TANURU LAFIKRA” in Facebook which in Swahili means the burning chamber of Knowledge in this group we have been discussing several matters affecting our country from political perceptions, social, economic and even spiritual sometimes. In this group we have chance to meet directly with our local leaders from district representatives, parties representatives, members of parliament and ministers. Most of the times leaders have been accepting challenges from the members of the opposition parties and leaders from the opposition parties receiving challenges from followers of the ruling party (CCM) most of the time we have interesting sessions were by in a single Facebook group post you can have about 300 comments of different professionals and people with passion about development in their country.
Technology has brought closer the leaders to their people, I can have a friend who is a member of parliament and whenever I found him online free I can have a chance to exchange views and my ideas with him. Leaders known can receive directly the opinions of the people and the local communities through technology. I would like to say technology bring out new level of transparency in the African governments and re defining the African democracy. This is the new era we encourage our leaders to use technology and users to join these groups to get the chance to impact their societies through the power of technology.

Specialization, that’s dangerous stuff, believe me if you want to suffer in your career call yourself names like programmer, developer, network admin or whatever. In Africa the opportunities they are as they come.  Professionalism isn’t for us make sure you now at least something in everything that is how we survive in Africa as ICT professionals. Sometimes you are broke with nothing in the pocket and there the deal come of developing a simple website with only the basics but since you have chosen to call yourself and network engineer  with no knowledge at all in HTML then you are missing a chance of making a good money out of this basic HTML knowledge.
Platform based, never depend in a particular platform or technology even if the difference is small compared to other technologies. Someone asked me one time to advise him wither he should continue with CCNP after finishing CCNA or he should go for MCSE so that he can have the basic knowledge for both Cisco and Microsoft platforms. Franklyn speaking my answer was go for MCSE because I knew the chances of getting hired in Africa for being a Cisco certified network professional they are there but a person with both the knowledge would be more valuable in the African industry since most of the companies are either in Microsoft or Cisco technologies and without forgetting Linux servers are getting up with speed. Never sticks to a particular knowledge or platform know something in everything.
Latest and complicated technologies, there is nothing wrong knowing or learning a new technology for your own good as an individual but be careful when you want to implement that knowledge directly to your business or company, most of the time Africa has been reluctant with the rate of change of technologies. Usually the companies and clients they try to adapt to the situations slowly. I remember when Adobe Flash came out most of my friends used to like developing their website using Adobe Flash and practicing using Action script 3.0 as their developing language but letter on they came to change since they were receiving a lot of complaints from their customers complaining about their sites failing to open up and take long time to load and the contents to appear. The lesson here is there was nothing wrong for them to using Adobe Flash that time but the environments is what let them down at that time the speed of the internet was slow, most of the people lack awareness of the technology and even some people didn’t know how to use other browsers as Mozilla Firefox or Chrome. Hence the result was a complete failure.
Forgetting the basics, I had a chance to work as Data Analyst in a government authority as a contract worker managing the data and analyzing them using Microsoft Excel before generating graphs and presentation through MS- Power point, believe me I use to call myself a Computer pioneer but when I reach there and see what people are able to do with Microsoft excel it was amazing experience. Sometimes the complex and advanced knowledge you have in IT becomes useless in Africa if you don’t know the basics, because most of the time people use the basic IT software or platforms to do their works. Just recently there have been introduction of SPSS in Tanzania and many logistic companies use the software as their major means of data management and report generation.
Failing to study the systems, understand what people want, don’t just stays there inside your room writing codes developing application which does not even fit to our local communities. This goes even to the people who study things which are not applicable in Africa. Data mining and software testing these are great two careers in Asia and Europe but for Africa we don’t consider data minor as a professional since we think anyone can search for the data and the client is the tester of the software. That is the very simple example on how the system thinks about our careers.  Among the major mistake you might do is to fail to understand the people in the industry.

After finishing my undergraduate studies in Bangalore India, I came back to Africa to my local town of Dar es salaam. I thought since I have enough knowledge in IT I believed I was ready to take challenge and start my own small ICT consultancy firm in Dar es Salaam. It didn’t work since in Dar es Salaam it was difficult to survive  the competition with the big boys in the industry so I decided to go to the developing capital city of Tanzania, Dodoma town where I started my business with my friend a small consultancy firm which deals with giving ICT support and the same time selling stationaries to the local colleges and institutions in the town.  All this time while in the business I learn a lot of things about the relationship between being ICT professional and ICT entrepreneur, what we think and discuss in our meetings or career developments seminars is completely difference with what happening on the ground.
First you should learn to think like Africans, Africans will only invest when we have already witnessed on the success of the projects. We always want to look were the project was conducted first before convincing us the project will work. Creating good portfolio is very important for any investor aiming at doing business with Africans. Remember paper works and good presentation about the business proposal will not work unless you have done the work once. Personally I have witnessed so many people denied the offers to do government projects since they lack proof of conducting exactly the same project somewhere else.
The second thing you should know about doing technology projects in Africa is that the government controls everything, things are different compared to Asia and Europe where by you will have IT giants companies with large capital and incomes running by themselves and dealing with major investors on their business. In Africa when you want to target a reasonable audience then your focus should be the government authorities I have done business and I know take it from me when an individual set a deal of one million Tanzanian shillings the government will take the same deal by ten million or more just ensure the execution of the projects goes well and finish your project in time.
Most of the time is not about what your company is able to do is how you sale yourself. If you have a good company with good portfolio and experience in the work but you don’t push in to get the tender from the authorities forget about having a chance to get that deal. That’s why most of the companies from Asia especially China get a lot of opportunities from African governments compared to other companies since they are persistent and always learn to blend  in with the local communities before going for their exact aim.
Take your time and think about the community first don’t just think about your business profit. Look at the impact of your business to the local people. Average African would rather spend money to buy food and clothes rather than buying gadgets or cover expensive mobile phone tariffs. Most of the successful mobile phone companies in Africa have learn the relationship between the audience and mobile tariffs. Don’t waste your time selling your products with high price sell it in lower price but make sure you cover the larger audience and for sure you will get your cost of production back.
Came up with ideas which will target rural areas and people living in lower class by realizing the level of their technology usage, don’t do a silly mistake of developing application or conduct a projects that works in P.C or a smart phone while you know an average mobile phone user in Africa would just use the phone for two things texting and calling that’s it. That’s why the USSD applications these days are very successful in Africa since they target SMS and Africans like texting SMS.
Learn from the locals, anywhere you go in Africa the strength of the families and traditional relationships is what runs business, that thing called professionalism hardly exists and that is the harsh reality. Learn to treat your clients as your blood relatives understand them, integrate with them and make sure you share your experience with them and then only you will be able to understand the challenges that will be facing your business.
You should learn about the priorities of Africans in their daily life that should be your base line of your work or project. Ask yourself dumb questions like “are they really ready to spend this amount of money to buy this?” before you do any projects or release any product in Africa since in Africa people only go for luxuries when the basics are fulfilled.
I hope this will be helpful for giants companies want to invest in Africa and for local small entrepreneurs trying to target the African audience as their main customers and buyers of their products and ideas.

Cybercrimes is emerging as serious threat to the word of computer technologies, government authorities, police and national intelligence agencies are acting towards the issue closely. Different strategies are put into action trying to combat the problem. Most organizations in recent days have taken a considerable decision to try and educate their employees and officials about the effects of cybercrimes and the importance of cyber security.
Cyber security is just a terminology composed of two words “cyber” and “security” digesting from the English dictionary cyber simply means being connected either virtually or physically. Given that we realize cyber security is just the security which is provided to you when you are connected. The questions is when you are connected to what, to the cyber world wither in an internet, office network or any other kind of network. The crimes which are executed when you are connected to the cyber world are what we call the cybercrimes.  These crimes include phishing, illegal hacking, Vishing, Cyber stalking, botnet and others.
Actually Phishing It is among the internet fraud involving getting financial information illegally online through spam email pretending to be from bank or institution or someone can create a dumb site and request you for your bank accounts credentials. Most of the time they will request for your accounts password or account number and tell you they want to verify your account. Actually the main intention is to use your credentials for illegal activities. In Tanzania recently most of the people have been victims of Phishing but through mobile phones through e-money transfers. Most of the people have been tricked to send their passwords to the cybercriminals who in turn stole money from their accounts. Recently there was a story of guy from a local bank who used to access his bank account through mobile was reported that all his money was stolen from his bank account after receiving a SMS message telling him you are the winner of certain stuffs and requires him to send his credentials through his phone which in turn allowed the criminals to access his accounts using their phone.
We have hacking, hacking is not a crime unless is done without a prior notice to the user of the account or records. Sometimes people hack their own network to check for any loop holes which might provide the rooms of attack from the cyber -criminals. Large companies these days’ higher hackers to hack into their systems and networks so that they can check or discover any vulnerability in their security systems. Hacking is a career also there are several certification in ethical hacking provided by different organization everywhere in the world. Sometimes is not necessarily to get in and still some data from the server or database the action itself of breaking into someone else online private data without the user’s awareness is considered to be a crime and for country with strong cyber laws is punishable by law.
Vishing, is the criminal practice of using social engineering voice over IP (VoIP) to access to private personal information from the public for the purpose of financial reward. The term is the combination of voice and phishing. Phishing is to request confidential information over the Internet under false pretenses in order to fraudulently obtain credit card numbers, passwords, or other personal data. This is when is used in technology don’t confuse with its normal usage.  Social engineering is the use of communication skills and quick wits in order to turn a scenario into a favorable situation. You have seen it the movies were by someone comes and try to talk down a another person smartly until I got a sensitive information needed can either be the name of the boss, ID number or password of some files, that is social engineering.  VoIP is a protocol for transmitting the human voice in digital form over the Internet or other networks as an audio stream, instead of using traditional telephone lines. When the two combines VoIP and Phishing is when we have vishing.
Cyber stalking basically is an act of online stalking like a real world stalkers they always disturb you and want to interact with you without your prior concern. The activities involve online harassment and abuse. It involves threatening behaviors or objects which disturbs the user of the internet. Most of the time  we don’t know that we are committing this crime, posting pictures into someone’s social networking walls tagging them into offensive stuffs or even emailing them weird messages is considered to be cyber stalking. You are removing the right of privacy and freedom to enjoy the internet of another user.
Botnet   is a collection of compromised computers, each of which is known as a 'bot', connected to the Internet. When a computer is compromised by an attacker, there is often code within the malware that commands it to become part of a botnet. The "botmaster" or "bot herder" controls these compromised computers via standards-based network protocols such as IRC and http this id from the Wikipedia explanation, the easy explanation is that the Bot - Net is the Bot network a compromised network in which the owner of the network has no longer power over it since it is being controlled by someone from outside or using another system which have already taken the control called botmaster. This most of the time is done by hackers for ransom to the big companies or organizations.
There are so many other cyber-crimes out there this is just an introduction, before you use the internet we expect you to know your rights and responsibilities. Users of technology have the obligation to make the cyber space the most secure space for someone to use and navigate. The internet is no longer safe that is the reality, always be careful with what you give to the internet because once you take it out there you can get it back. Wither is the photos with your family or anything else. Develop attitude of changing your passwords after some time pass and always don’t give your personal details to any site or person online. For more details about cyber security you can read my paper from slide-share. Am hoping to prepare free seminar on cyber- security soon enough. Stay safe play safely online.

The East African Community is booming currently, people from different industries are exploiting the opportunity created by the union. We expect people from the ICT industry to do the same thing, since it is an opportunity to target larger audience with your idea or product. The challenges are from everywhere while Nairobi just recent was hosting the event Pivot East Kigali does the same with lot of innovative project aiming at bringing the town at the status of East Africa IT hub.  Quoted from the writer of white-African blog he said that Pivot East is about finding the tech startups with high-growth potential in the region and putting them on stage in front of investors, media and businesses. It’s about finding “what’s next” in East Africa’s vibrant mobile tech scene. Chances are, the best of these startups are providing highly innovative and disruptive solutions. The KINU projects for Tanzania startups projects is the proof that the competition is everywhere and people are ready to accept the challenge as the industry grows to its peak in the eastern part of Africa.
It’s great to witness this marvelous progress in the ICT industry in East Africa but the question remains in the awareness of ICT professionals about the existence of these projects and how to utilize the opportunity created by these startups programmes. Most of the ICT professionals and entrepreneurs in Tanzania have not yet realize the importance of these startups programmes and support provided by the business incubators created by the government and donors to help them improve their projects.
TANZICT stands for The Information Society and ICT Sector Development Project. It’s bilateral collaboration project between the Ministry of Communications, Science and Technology of Tanzania (MCST) and Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland. This project is there for us small ICT entrepreneurs with our valuable ideas to go and exploit them with all the resources around you. They are there to support us and until now they have done a marvelous work in providing support whenever is needed. Incubators are there but they won’t have a meaning if they are not fulfilling the purpose of their existence. It is up to us to go there with our ideas and meet the responsible people who will help us by supporting our ideas and help us reach our goals. To read more details about TanzICT read here…
We should be ready to face the challenges and compete with the rate of changes in the technology trends by becoming more innovative and cultivating deeper into the ideas we current have. Having the idea is one thing and being able to implement the idea is another thing. These projects help you to be able to implement your ideas and bring them into life. The KINU hub have already hosted two events to bring technology enthusiast together including the Google+ APIs hackathon in Dar and African News Innovation Challenge Brainstorming Session , we should be ready to attend these types of events if we want to have a chance of meeting people who share the same passion and interest as us about the ICT industry of Tanzania.
Each and every weekend these days they have been an event in one of the two hubs the KINU innovation Hub and TanzICT take your time to visit their sites and get a chance to participate in the events hosted by these hubs, Take your time also to visit and read East African ICT blogs for more details about funding and startups currently the Savannah Funding is on. People are applying for the funds looking for an opportunity to have a chance to develop their business. What are you waiting for this is your dream chance of achieving your goals. Other important links and organization for startups and project funding:

Business card:
It’s awkward to go and try negotiating the deal with someone without a business card to explain were you are coming from, what are you doing in your company and just in case someone need to reach you what should that person do. Business card tends to increase credibility from your clients. Is where you display summary of your information like your job title and contact details, You might say but I have my phone and I can just give out my number but in cooperate world we don’t work that way so if you don’t have one go quick and print one it will hardly cost you 5000 Tanzania shillings for 100 pieces at local shops Kariakoo.

Have a bank account
I have seen this most of the time, you finish whatever task the client as given you on time and the client are satisfied with the work which you have done and he wants to wire you the money through your bank accounts suddenly it is not possible to do that because you don’t have an account in the first place. If the problem is the startup money at list buy a mobile phone chip which will be reserved purposely for just putting your money during your cooperate transactions wither its TIGOPESA or MPESA I don’t care, but still you have to realize not having a bank account makes you to suffer with customer’s bouncing cheques in banks at the same time makes you to appear as an amateur in front of your customer most of the time.

Register your small company
It will hardly cost you 6000 Tanzanian shillings to go to BRELA the authority selected by the government of united republic of Tanzania to register your company name and get your name fixed in the local authorities records as someone who is doing his business legitimately. You can also pay for your tax payers identification number (TIN) and valued added tax (VAT) for your small business it is not enough but it is enough to portray you as a pro in the ICT entrepreneurship industry. In the future when the company grows a bit you can have the partnership deed, Business license and other stuffs which will help you get tenders from the local government, that is what people does in order to blend in the system and get the chance to exist.

Respect your work
What you do is valuable that why people are coming to you, if you are doing something for yourself then remember you are reflecting the whole ICT community of Tanzania. Don’t be cheap and don’t be too demanding set the price according to the task given. If is the website you are developing, a flyer you are designing or even industry standard software make sure you don’t kill the market for others . For example the website development business was very good business but now people can’t even make good money out of it because of too many unprofessional people in the ICT industry of Tanzania. If someone underestimates your potential then tell him to go and find someone who can do that work cheaply for him. Never get confused with the money go through the task you are doing and evaluate the cost.

Contracts and agreement
Franklyn speaking most of the people they think what we are doing is very easy because we can do it quickly and effectively and give them the result they need on time. This reach to a point that they think the agreement you made prior to the beginning of the task makes you to earn more money than the task you have done. My advice is you can download or prepare your own business contract displaying what the customer should pay you before the commencement of the project and after if its 20 percent or 40 you just choose yourself and indicate clearly the costs of terminating the contract and the duration of the task just in case he didn’t provided the resources you need to do your work on time. Believe me this will make you to be a pro and always you will be able to monitor your projects and finish them in time. Then if you can afford you can have a low cost lawyer by your side to view all your agreements and contracts.
Have your own website
This is inevitable, sell yourself online you can just create a simple attractive site with just home, contact us, about us and portfolio of works you have done. It is easy when a customer comes and you just tell him to visit your website and look at your works, this will also increase your credibility and trust. Then if you can’t afford a website then at least a blog site or a page in a social or professional networking sites like LinkedIn and others.

Dress code and confidence
Dress code is an art and you have to be the master of the art, I don’t blame you that why in the cooperate world they have a joke “don’t send a geek to negotiate a deal you will end up crying” lol, but it isn’t true if you decide to change the facts. Learn to dress neatly during the time you visit your client or fellow entrepreneur  show them you mean business and that you share mutual benefit and is not like he is helping you or giving you assistance. When you set your terms of agreements they should be ready to respect them as you respect theirs and just in case they don’t meet your requirements don’t hesitate to move on to another client. This make them realize IT is not just playing with your PC is something valuable and is someone’s career so a bit of respect is required.

Read newspapers and magazines, follow business news
Most of the time in the newspapers you will see small ads of people looking for professional or advertising their skills for free just by having a copy of the newspaper and take out the coupon you will be able to advertise yourself. In the news you will learn new trends of business in your local city and were the market is more demanding wither people want websites, mobile apps or just small payroll systems and so on. You will be able to have a chance to consolidate yourself in those areas before approaching the customers.

Advertise yourself
You have the Facebook pages, blogger pages, twitter accounts and YouTube videos all of them waiting for you to advertise your business or your potential and what you can do. Take your time design a flyer and post it on Facebook instead of all day posting your girlfriends picture lol. You can create a small video about what you do and upload it in YouTube and start share it to your friends and ask them to share to others and so on. Through slide share you can upload your paper works and projects you have been doing and put the links in your info page in the social networking site you are using.

Discipline and Trust
Finish people work in time and try your level best to meet their expectations and you will get more clients, this is the promise am giving to you. Make sure you don’t receive the money unless you can finish the task on time of you have someone you trust who can finish the project on time and meets the customer requirements at the same time.
If you follow these 10 things effectively you will be among the successful ICT entrepreneurs who are coming from the scratch to build your business, at some point of time try to find a source of large capital which will consolidate your business.
